bio – writing

I’ve been working on a few different projects, both my own and for other people. Freelance writing, editing, proofreading, brainstorming: poetry manuscripts, theatre projects, children’s stories.

As of the past couple of months, I’ve been working on some ESL stories for a Korean educational publisher.

These days I’m submitting the occasional poem to online journals. When and if they are actually accepted is another story. I’m trying my hand at more non-fiction writing: essays, journalism. Hoping to make writing – and the creative process in general – more a part of my life. Some big project ideas simmering. And last but not least, I’ve got a manuscript of prose-poetry in circulation, hoping to find a home with a chapbook publisher . . .

From winter 2008 to summer 2009, I was contributing again to the Gwangju News, (which, sadly, does not have an updated web presence – but which, happily, is now starting to print on recycled paper). I’m considering some other magazines too, and some other magazines are considering me.

From December 2008 to March 2009, I contributed to the 6th cycle of writers at DailyHaiku.org.

My poems have been published in numerous print journals and anthologies, including The Harpweaver, The One-Eye Review, Connections Magazine, and Who Lies Beautifully: the Kalamalka Anthology (Canada); Spring Wind: Buddhist Cultural Forum (U.S.A.); The World Healing Book and The Book of Hope (Iceland); and The Quest (India).

In 2003, Iceland’s Publishing Beyond Borders  released Circumambulations, my first poetry chapbook.

In addition to the printed word, I have participated in many live poetry readings and performances including the 2007 Edmonton Poetry Festival’s Poets Across Borders translation project, Poetry on the Peaks (Banff Centre for the Arts), the Greenboathouse summer reading series (Vernon, British Columbia), the Stroll of Poets, and the Raving Poets (Edmonton, Alberta).

Throughout 2005 and 2006 I wrote news, travel, and wildlife stories for the Gwangju News, a monthly magazine published by the Gwangju International Center in South Korea.

Some online samples of my poetry are available here and here, or via the “Blogroll” links on the right of this page.

Gary Snyder is probably my favorite poet. Please see both the “links” and “poetics” pages for more interests and influences… in the future I hope to pursue nature-writing, all kinds of poetry, and more. I would also like to teach creative writing…
